REINA AND I WERE HIDING out in an alley a few blocks over from the tavern. We'd run about half the distance back to the arena before I got tired of running and decided to hide. So, we ducked behind a tailor shop of some kind and waited for the heat to die down.

Reina was sitting down in an old wooden chair that had been placed against the wall of the alley.

Knowing that I needed to keep an eye out for anybody still hunting for us, I stood at the end of the alley; periodically, I would peek around the corner and judge how safe it was based on what I heard and what I could see.

“Did we lose 'em?” Reina asked. She was gasping for breath as if she just finished running a marathon, when in reality I'd carried her the entire time.

This place has really done a number on her. Before coming to Helheim, Reina was an accomplished Monster Hunter. She could run for hours without pause. Now, even the slightest bit of exercise exhausted her.

It was odd to see my independent wife so vulnerable.

“Yeah, I think so.” I left my post and walked over to her. “Are you doing okay? You seem—”

“Sick?” she asked, perhaps a little more aggressively than she intended to. “Yeah, I am sick. This place is killing me, and every second I'm here I get even worse.”

“I was going to say tired, but sick works too.”

“Right,” she scoffed.

“Why are you acting like this?” I asked, honestly annoyed with her attitude. I was trying my best to get her out of here as safely and quickly as possible. But that didn't seem to be good enough for her.

It was like she was hell bent on making me as miserable as possible.

“Why? I'm in hell!” she yelled. “I was literally dragged to hell because of you. And you have the nerve to ask me why I'm acting like this? Why don't you take a look in the mirror, Torga; then you'll know why I'm acting like this.”

I sucked in a long breath and let it out as a sigh.

“You know what. You're absolutely right, it's my fault you're here. Why don't I just go and get that wish, so you can get out of here and never have to see me again— that sound good to you?”

“Sounds fantastic.”

“Yeah, I figured it might.” I threw her over my shoulder and then started walking in the vague direction of the arena.

Reina threw a bit of a fit because I was carrying her, but I really couldn't care less at this point. I tried— God did I try to make it up to her—but nothing I did was ever good enough.

I gave her a swift smack on the ass because her voice was starting to grate on my nerves— which both amused me and had the benefit of shutting her up.

I raised three children on my own— actually, four if you count Ayla. If Reina wanted to act like a child, I knew just how to treat her to make her behave.
